Students in Scottsdale are being encouraged to apply for Mayor's Ability Awards scholarships. The scholarships, available from Jan. 29 to March 1, aim to promote education and inclusivity for students with disabilities. The initiative recognizes the potential of these students and empowers them to achieve their academic and professional goals. In other news, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale is urging people to refrain from using preserve trails during and after heavy rain. The preserve is expected to receive up to two inches of rainfall through Tuesday, and while the precipitation is much needed, it could result in trails becoming saturated and susceptible to damage from boots, hooves, and bike tires. The city advises residents to learn more about the preserve and exercise caution when using the trails.

The Scottsdale Civic Center Library has been voted as "Best Library of 2023" by Phoenix New Times. The library was recognized for its diverse programming for all ages, its charming youth room, rotating public art, and more. The 103,000-square-foot facility, which opened in 1968, offers amenities such as more than 70 public use computers, an art gallery, and curbside hold pickup. In terms of public meetings, the city of Scottsdale will be hosting several meetings in the coming weeks. These meetings provide an opportunity for residents to learn about city issues, projects, and activities. The meetings scheduled for the week of Jan. 22 include a City Council Special Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 23, a City Council Regular Meeting and Work Study Session on the same day, a Neighborhood Advisory Commission meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 24, and a Human Services Advisory Commission meeting on Thursday, Jan. 25. Scottsdale residents are also encouraged to participate in various events and activities happening in the city. The Barrett-Jackson car auction, known as "The World's Greatest Collector Car Auction," is currently taking place at WestWorld and will run until Jan. 28. The auction features nearly 2,000 collector automobiles and attracts thousands of spectators. Additionally, Scottsdale Parks and Recreation is hosting a master planning process to gather ideas for future projects and priorities. Residents can join the "Ideas in Play Pop-up" event on Jan. 27 at Scottsdale Civic Center to share their ideas and enjoy free donuts.

Furthermore, the city is promoting unity and understanding through the Regional Unity Walk on Jan. 27 at Tempe Beach Park. The walk aims to bring together Scottsdale and neighboring cities to promote mutual respect. The event will feature refreshments, entertainment, and a one-mile walk. Scottsdale Western Week, which takes place from Jan. 27 to Feb. 4, celebrates the city's rich western heritage with various events and activities. Highlights include a kick-off event in Historic Old Town, line dancing lessons at the waterfront, and the Hashknife Pony Express at the Museum of the West.

Other upcoming events include the Arizona Indian Festival at Scottsdale Civic Center on Feb. 3 and 4, the Scottsdale ArtWalk held every Thursday, and the Old Town Farmers Market every Saturday through June. The city also offers programs and services such as the Neighborhood College Spring 2024 Series, which kicks off with the HOA/Condo Symposium on Jan. 27, and water efficiency workshops hosted by Scottsdale Water.

Residents interested in getting involved in their community can participate in the Scottsdale 101 Citizen Academy, which provides a deeper understanding of the city's inner workings. The academy is open to Scottsdale residents and business owners and will meet on Thursdays from March 21 to May 9. Graduation will take place on May 14. Additionally, residents can join Speak Up Scottsdale, an online community where they can discuss city issues and projects.

In other news, Pinnacle Peak Park is undergoing trail renovations as part of the Investing in Our Scottsdale initiative. The renovations include trail stabilization, new steps, and erosion control measures. The back third of the trail will be closed during construction for safety reasons. The city is also hiring for the position of Human Services Case Worker, which involves providing social services to vulnerable populations.
