Recent data shows that academic performance in Navajo County schools remains a concern. During the 2022-23 school year, 73.3% of students in grades 3 through 8 did not pass the mathematics section of the AASA assessment according to information from the Arizona Department of Education (https://www.azed.gov/). For high schoolers during the same period, 80% failed the mathematics portion of the ACT exam (https://www.azed.gov/).
English proficiency rates were also low: 69% of students in grades 3 through 8 did not pass the English section of the AASA (https://www.azed.gov/), while 72% of high school students failed the English section of the ACT (https://www.azed.gov/).
However, recent figures indicate some improvement. In the 2023-24 school year, 21% of Navajo County high schoolers passed the mathematics section of the ACT (https://www.azed.gov/) and 27.3% of third through eighth graders passed math on the AASA (https://www.azed.gov/).
