The 24th Navajo Nation Council passed a $652 million CARES Act funding proposal presented by President Jonathan Nez earlier this month.
“The Navajo people are demanding that our Nation’s leaders work together to put the CARES Act funds to use for the people and our communities – that is what this comprehensive funding,” Nez said in a press release issued by the Navajo Nation late last month.
The massive spending legislation will go toward water projects, power lines, broadband and casino employees who have not received a paycheck since the COVID-19 pandemic first took hold.
ABC 15 in Phoenix reported that lawmakers discussed the bill for nearly 30 hours in a special session that spanned more than three days.
Lacking many resources and its healthcare apparatus not up to par, the Navajo Nation is grappling with higher coronavirus rates, and it hopes the funding would aid efforts in flattening the curve.
