33 years ago, Deputy Robert “Bob” Varner Jr. gave the ultimate sacrifice

Navajo County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Jan. 4.

33 years ago, Deputy Robert “Bob” Varner Jr. gave the ultimate sacrifice. After stopping a stolen vehicle on I-40, the passenger opened fire, striking Deputy Varner several times. The suspects split up, and the shooter took his own life before being apprehended. The driver of the vehicle was apprehended and sentenced to 13 years. Deputy Varner had been a member of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office for one year after retiring from the Arizona Department of Public Safety with 24 years of service.
