Data Privacy Day

Internet

Navajo County issued the following announcement on Jan. 28.

In 2014, the US Congress adopted Senate Resolution 33, declaring January 28th as National Data Privacy Day.

That day is a best observed by learning about what your “data” is, how to safeguard your data, and commit to increasing your awareness for the potential misuse of your data.

Your “data” can best be defined as any digital record that is created based on your daily activities. Some data is required to be heavily protected such as credit card transactions and personal healthcare information. Other parts of your “data” that are not as well protected include things like your Internet browsing activity and shopping rewards club activity.

Your data can be used in a variety of ways. Stores can use the data to tailor notifications of sales on products you buy often. However, the bad guys can also use that data to target you for scams on products you buy often.

Another piece of your data that often gets overlooked is your password. You should be changing your passwords often and using different passwords for every system you secure with a password. A lot of companies get hacked every year, and one of the high-value targets for the bad guys is the list of users and passwords. You don’t want to give the bad guys access to your bank or credit accounts because your grocery store had a data breach.

Remember that all the data out there about you is ultimately your property, and your responsibility to protect. Be vigilant with it.
