On April 16th at around 3:15 PM, a male subject was observed actively burglarizing a vehicle in the area of WC Riles and Benton Ave. A bystander alerted a Flagstaff Police Sergeant in the area. The Sergeant attempted contact with the man. He recognized the man as a suspect in several recent vehicle burglaries where numerous items including firearms were stolen. As a result, the Sergeant believed the man to be armed. The man, later identified as 22 year old Hector Garcia Almendarez of Flagstaff, ran from the Sergeant and entered a residence on Benton. There were two other people in the residence. After a short time a woman was released from the residence. A short time later, Almendarez came out of the residence. He was taken into police custody without further incident. Almendarez was inside the residence for roughly one half hour. At the time of his arrest, a firearm was located in Almendarez’ possession.
Almendarez was booked into the Coconino County Jail on 2 counts of Burglary. This investigation is ongoing. There are currently no additional suspects being sought by the Flagstaff Police Department.
