During Black History Month, we herald the Buffalo Soldiers, the first all-African American U.S. Army regiments, formed in 1866. These soldiers helped protect the nation's westward expansion and were stationed for a time at Fort Apache in Navajo County. In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation freed the enslaved and also announced the acceptance of African Americans into the Union Army.
