Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer participated in a panel discussion on the future of recycled water in Arizona. The panel, hosted by the Arizona Republic, took place at Desert Monks Brewing in Gilbert.
The panel discussion was moderated by the Arizona Republic and included industry experts such as Troy Hayes, Phoenix water director, Randall Matas, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality water division deputy director, and Arturo Ruiz, lead brewer at Desert Monks Brewing.
During the event, Biesemeyer emphasized the importance of recycled water in enabling Scottsdale's sustainable growth. He stated, "This was a great opportunity to discuss Scottsdale's long history of recycling water and how recycled water will continue to be essential in enabling Scottsdale to grow in a sustainably."
Guests at the panel discussion had the opportunity to sample water from Scottsdale's Advanced Water Treatment Facility. Additionally, they could purchase six-packs of "Immaculate Fermentation," a pale ale created by Desert Monks Brewing specifically for the 2023 One Water Brewing Showcase.
The One Water Brewing Showcase was part of Scottsdale's Canal Convergence, an annual festival celebrating interactive light-based artworks along the Scottsdale Waterfront. The event aimed to educate guests about the advanced water purification process and allowed them to taste beers crafted by eight local breweries using Scottsdale's recycled water.
Scottsdale is home to one of the most sophisticated recycled water facilities in the world, located at the Scottsdale Water Campus. It is the first permanent facility of its kind in Arizona and the third in the nation permitted as a pilot program for advanced water purification. The Advanced Water Treatment Facility is capable of treating up to 20 million gallons of recycled water daily to a quality standard that exceeds that of bottled water.
Although recycled water is not currently used in Scottsdale's drinking water system, it is considered a valuable and sustainable water source for the future. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality recently released an Advanced Water Purification Proposed Program Roadmap, which outlines goals and standards for the use of recycled water statewide.
