The Scottsdale Fire Department recently held its annual ceremony to honor outstanding achievements of its employees and volunteers. The event took place at the Central Lawn in the newly designed mall area by the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Fire Chief Tom Shannon expressed his appreciation for the dedicated staff, stating, "Our staff is tremendously gifted, efficient, and they live our mission of 'We Care for You.' These individuals go above and beyond to exceed expectations and meet the needs of our community."

Several individuals were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the fire department:

Deborah Peck, Siety Insight, received the Community Partner award for her integral work in promoting the department's "We care for you" culture. Her expertise in social science and large organization culture management has guided the identification and investment in the next generation of leaders.

Mary Ellen Joseph, a volunteer since 2008, was named Volunteer of the Year. Her background as a PT tech has been invaluable to the Home Safe Home program, where she addresses specific issues that can increase the risk of falling and identifies appropriate remedies. She also assists with the Lockboxes for Seniors Program and teaches Hands-only CPR to the community.

Mark Garcia, the Civilian Employee of the Year, played a crucial role in addressing Scottsdale Fire's IT resource needs. Despite unforeseen challenges, Garcia took the initiative to identify missing resources and provide necessary fixes.

Firefighter Marty Armstrong was recognized as Firefighter of the Year. Known for his advocacy for the department and its mission, Armstrong actively participates in committee work and IAFF Local 5050 member services. His leadership in fire programs ensures that future firefighters receive training in modern methods of fire service delivery.

Captain Tony Ambrosia was named Officer of the Year for his commitment to improving training and ensuring the safety of department members. Ambrosia's role as lead in the Honor Guard also involves providing support to the loved ones of fallen firefighters.

In addition to these individual awards, the department acknowledged the following individuals for their meritorious service:

- L615 crew members Mike Virgadamo, Mike MacCrone, Lee Davis, and Rory Wirth, who demonstrated exceptional efforts during a Mayday call at a house fire in Phoenix.

- Preston Fuller, Cody Taylor, Tristan Watmore, and Rory Wirth, who took quick action to save a woman in distress and ultimately saved her life.

- Andrew Szerlag, who heroically saved one of his crew members who was choking.

Chief Shannon expressed his pride in all the award winners and emphasized their dedication to serving the residents and visitors of Scottsdale. He stated, "We are pleased to highlight the great work and honor the best of the best."

The ceremony also included recognition of new hires and promotions within the department. Chief Shannon highlighted the growth of the Scottsdale Fire Department to meet the emerging needs of the community and expressed excitement for the future.

As the department continues to prioritize excellence and commitment to public safety, the individuals honored at the ceremony serve as shining examples of the dedication and professionalism exhibited by all members of the Scottsdale Fire Department.
