U.S. Representative David Schweikert (AZ-01) delivered a speech on the House Floor this week, discussing the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce government costs and improve efficiency. Schweikert highlighted current uses of AI that enhance quality of life and advocated for several legislative measures he has proposed to leverage AI for reducing bureaucratic overhead.

In his speech, Schweikert addressed concerns about future generations' economic prospects: "The two biggest changes I expect in society, in the economy, and in the world, over the next decade or two, will be synthetic biology and artificial intelligence," he stated. He emphasized the moral imperative of addressing these issues to ensure future generations are not poorer than their parents.

Schweikert also discussed potential cost savings from AI implementation within government services: "Imagine if you called the IRS and it stays on the phone with you... because it sounds every bit like a person but stays on the phone with you, listens to you, and walks you through how to fill out your form." He argued that replacing certain government roles with AI could make government less expensive while maintaining service efficiency.

Furthermore, Schweikert touched on current models of AI innovation: "We’ll publish a report from the Joint Economic Committee... [showing] obesity will cost this country as high as $9.1 trillion over the next ten years – the single biggest spend in this government." He noted various advancements in AI related to healthcare and criticized existing policies that may hinder such innovations from reaching their full potential.

Congressman David Schweikert serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and is currently Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee. He is also Vice Chairman of the bicameral Joint Economic Committee, chairs several task forces and caucuses including those focused on blockchain, telehealth, Singapore relations, and access to capital and credit.
