Have you ever heard of the Read Better Be Better Program? Our Library District is excited to share it with you!
Did you know? Students who do not read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school, but with proper reading intervention, there is an 89% chance students who can read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade will graduate from high school, irrespective of socio-economic status.
Read Better Be Better has served over 7,500 students since 2015. They currently are providing programs to 66 schools and 11 community based organizations: Pinetop-Lakeside Public Library being one of them.
Our Library District attended a graduation party for 23 students who completed the Read Better Be Better Program at Pinetop-Lakeside Public Library.
Read Better Be Better’s mission is to connect young readers and youth leaders to inspire a love of literacy and learning. The organization’s after-school and at-home programs serve 2nd – 4th grade Readers who are paired for a semester with middle through high school Leaders who improve their leadership skills while helping their Reader improve their literacy skills. Leaders are provided with ongoing training in implementing reading strategies, leadership, and coaching skills by RBBB Program Coaches. Together, Program Coaches, Program Coach Assistants, Leaders, and Readers work to improve concentration, reading comprehension, and the enjoyment of reading. Pinetop-Lakeside Library recently held a graduation event, inviting parents and offering pizza as well as gift bags. Navajo County Library District also gave the graduates a reading bag that held a chapter book and goodies.
Pinetop-Lakeside will offer this program again in April. Patrons may call the library to reserve their spot. Miss Betsy, the Library manager, and her team of Library Friends will be facilitating. The Friends of the Library at Pinetop were instrumental in facilitating this program with funding and volunteering their time, as needed.
Congratulations to the graduates!
