August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month (DIAM) in Arizona. DIAM began in August 2004 in collaboration with Phoenix Children's Hospital and is now the largest collaborative water safety effort in the state of Arizona. June, July, and August are peak times for child drownings in Arizona and back-to-school distractions in August make it a high risk month for child drowning.

Scottsdale is dedicated to Drowning Prevention through education, outreach and robust programming – including learn to swim lessons for all ages and abilities. Thanks to a grant from USA Swimming, Scottsdale will offer FREE learn to swim lessons in the month of August. This applies to all learn to swim lessons from sea babies (ages 6 months to 3 years) all the way up to adult swim and stroke refinement (ages 18+). Starting Tuesday, July 25 Scottsdale residents can sign up, and non-residents can sign up beginning Tuesday, August 1. Visit Recreation.ScottsdaleAZ.gov to see class times and locations.

It's never too early or too late to learn about water safety. Sign up for a class today!
