WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative David Schweikert (AZ-01) made his stance clear today as he voted against H.R. 5860, the Continuing Appropriations Act, which aimed to extend government funding at current levels for another 45 days. Schweikert expressed his disappointment in the bill, stating that it failed to address the nation’s worsening fiscal trajectory and unmitigated border crisis.
“On Friday, Republicans put forward a fiscally responsible package to keep the government open while Congress continues to work through the appropriations process. This bill would have cut discretionary spending by 30% while protecting Medicare, Social Security, defense, and veterans’ funding. The package also included the strongest border security policies in decades and established a bipartisan debt commission that I’ve worked on for years to address our nation’s fiscal health,” said U.S. Representative David Schweikert.
“Unfortunately, 21 Republicans voted with the Democrats to defeat this package. As a result, a package that included higher spending levels negotiated by the Left passed the House in spite of the fact that our financial wheels are coming off the rails. With government borrowing close to $2.3 trillion in Fiscal Year 2023 alone, I could not vote for this package and allow the death spiral to continue unimpeded. I will continue to work to pass fiscally responsible appropriations bills to fund the government and curb Washington’s spending addiction,” Schweikert continued.
U.S. Representative David Schweikert has consistently advocated for fiscal responsibility and has been actively working to address the nation's financial challenges. Despite the passing of the Continuing Appropriations Act, Schweikert remains committed to passing appropriations bills that prioritize fiscal responsibility and curb excessive government spending.
