Today, U.S. Congressman David Schweikert (AZ-01) participated in a dedication ceremony of the Fountain Hills Post Office in honor of Dr. C.T. Wright. The ceremony recognized Dr. Wright's devotion to public service and his meaningful contributions that have left a remarkable impact on countless Arizona communities.
Joined by Fountain Hills Mayor Ginny Dickey, U.S. Postal Service Arizona/New Mexico District Manager John Morgan, and Dr. Wright's niece, Dr. Olivet James-Robinson, Congressman Schweikert reflected on the life and legacy of Dr. Wright. During the ceremony, Dr. Wright's relatives were presented with a plaque commemorating the renaming of the post office as the "Dr. C.T. Wright Post Office Building." They were also given a red line copy of the Public Law that Congressman Schweikert shepherded through Congress, as well as a framing of the Congressional Record marking the day the legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
In his remarks, Congressman Schweikert acknowledged Dr. Wright's resilience and determination in the face of challenges, stating, "This is a reward for someone who took on brutal challenges and overcame them. He never let the battles darken his soul. We are all better as individuals and a community because the Wrights chose to spend part of their lives with us. And that's what makes this such a moral, special occasion."
Dr. C.T. Wright was a passionate educator, known for his expertise in teaching at many of the country's historically black colleges. After his time as a teacher, he shifted his focus to human rights and founded the Light of Hope Institute. For 21 years, Dr. Wright resided in Arizona, where he became a figurehead in the local community. He served in various capacities, including Chairman of the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency, member of the Fountain Hills Unified School District Governing Board, President of the Fountain Hills Kiwanis Club, and President of the Arizona African Society.
The legislation designating the Fountain Hills Post Office as the "Dr. C.T. Wright Post Office Building" was introduced by Congressman Schweikert on October 20, 2021, as a tribute to Dr. Wright's distinguished achievements and contributions to countless Arizona communities. After unanimous approval in both the Senate and House of Representatives, the legislation was signed into law as Public Law No: 117-279 on December 27, 2022.
The dedication ceremony served as a testament to Dr. Wright's lasting impact and the recognition of his dedication to public service. The renaming of the post office will serve as a lasting reminder of his contributions to the Fountain Hills community and the state of Arizona as a whole.
