In an effort to address the significant problem of residential food waste, the city of Scottsdale is taking proactive measures to educate its residents on the importance of reducing food waste and finding sustainable solutions. With residential food waste accounting for 40 percent of landfill material nationwide, Scottsdale is collaborating with local businesses to promote composting at home and encouraging residents to donate unused food.

The timing of this initiative is particularly crucial as the holiday season approaches, when the amount of leftovers and food waste tends to increase. By raising awareness and providing resources, Scottsdale aims to empower its residents to make simple changes in their everyday lives that can have a significant impact on reducing food waste.

The consequences of food waste are far-reaching and have both environmental and social implications. Land, water, labor, and energy resources are utilized in the production, processing, transportation, preparation, storage, and disposal of discarded food. Additionally, the food that could potentially feed families in need ends up in landfills.

By adopting efficient food practices and reducing residential food waste, not only can resources be conserved, but pollution and greenhouse gas emissions can also be mitigated. Furthermore, this initiative can help save money and alleviate hunger in the community.

One of the key ways residents can contribute to this cause is by composting their food waste. Scottsdale encourages its residents to compost at home, thereby diverting organic waste from landfills and creating nutrient-rich compost that can be used for gardening. Additionally, residents are urged to donate excess food to local food banks, ensuring that the food reaches those who need it.

Being mindful of portion sizes and engaging in meal planning can also play a significant role in reducing food waste. By planning meals effectively and only preparing what is needed, residents can minimize the amount of leftovers that often go to waste.

To further promote sustainable practices and raise awareness about reducing food waste, Scottsdale is hosting various events and educational opportunities. Residents are encouraged to join a conversation on the topic online through Speak Up Scottsdale or visit Scottsdale Solid Waste and Scottsdale Library in person. An event will also be held at the Old Town Farmer's Market on Saturday, Jan. 6, where residents can learn more about composting and how to reduce food waste.

Looking ahead, Scottsdale plans to continue its efforts in combating residential food waste. Additional composting classes and educational opportunities will be available in the spring of 2024, providing residents with the knowledge and tools they need to make a positive impact on the environment and their community.

For more information and resources on reducing food waste, residents can visit the ScottsdaleAZ.gov website and search for "food waste." By taking these steps, Scottsdale is paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious community.
