The city of Scottsdale today is mourning the loss of Captain Kory Yule, Scottsdale Fire Department, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, due to cancer. Kory served the Scottsdale community and his fellow public safety professionals for more than 20 years - a legacy that will live on in the scores of firefighters and thousands of residents he cared for during his service. He was 42 years old.
Yule's cancer, known as multiple myeloma, is among those conditions known to be a higher risk for firefighters due to their exposure to "forever chemicals."
“Kory represented the future of the fire service in Scottsdale,” said Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “He was selfless in his mentoring of young firefighters, and he was a trusted leader in the field. His career trajectory was certain to include greater leadership responsibilities. He will be deeply missed.”
Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega expressed his thoughts on behalf of the community.
“Our hearts are heavy as Scottsdale mourns the loss of Captain Kory Yule, a courageous first responder, husband and father,” said Mayor Ortega. “Our deepest condolences turn to his family and to the ferociously loyal firefighter families of Scottsdale.”
“Today is a very sad day for our extended city of Scottsdale family,” said Scottsdale City Manager Jim Thompson. “Serving with excellence is one of the tenets of our organization. Kory Yule certainly embodied that excellence in everything he did, including the way he dedicated himself to the fire service, beginning his career as a Scottsdale firefighter and working his way up to captain. Please keep Kory and his family, and our colleagues in the Scottsdale Fire Department, in your hearts as we mourn his passing.”
