Navajo County districts: American indian or alaskan native students were the most represented ethnicity in 2021-22 school year

Of the many ethnicities represented in Arizona districts, the most prevalent among students enrolled in Navajo County districts in the 2021-22 school year was American Indian or Alaskan Native, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Of the 17,228 students attending school districts within Navajo County, 44.6% were American Indian or Alaskan Native. White students were the second largest ethnicity in Navajo County districts (36.8%).

In the previous school year, American Indian or Alaskan Native students still were the most common group in Navajo County districts, representing 45.1% of the student body.

Winslow Unified District had the most even distribution of races among county districts, which included 54.4% white students, 17.7% American Indian or Alaskan Native students, 17.7% Latino students, and 8.2% Multi-racial or non-Hispanic students.

In the 2021-22 school year, the total number of students enrolled in school districts in the county increased 1.7% when compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Navajo County.

In 2022 Arizona had roughly one teacher for every 19 students, compared to the national average of one teacher for 16 students. Teachers handling a higher number of students was found to have negative consequences for students’ school performance.

A 2023 study from Scholaroo.com ranked Arizona last out of all U.S. states in terms of educational success, giving the state poor markets for school quality, student success, and teacher-to-student ratio.
