Medical marijuana cards are now digital, with the Arizona Department of Health Services no longer dispersing physical cards.
Since Dec. 1, DHS has emailed all patients their cards in a PDF. If users still want to carry a physical card, they can print one themselves. The department sent an advisory regarding the change last month.
State Sen. David Gowan (R-Sierra Vista) sponsored the legislation requiring the DHS to provide the digital cards. Gov. Doug Ducey signed the bill into law at the end of the legislative session.
DHS spokesman Chris Minnick told the Arizona Capitol Times that the digital cards will only apply to new applications after Dec. 1. An email from the department said those with a physical card that has not expired can continue to keep it until the renewal period.
Cards validated before Aug. 27, 2019, will expire one year to the day of the date printed while cards validated on or after that date will remain good for two years.
